GENOCIDE SCHOLARS MEET IN 2007 IN SARAJEVO


CONFERENCE THEME: Genocide Studies and Prevention


Call for Papers


The International Association of Genocide Scholars (IAGS) will hold its seventh biennial meeting in Sarajevo on 9-13 July 2007, hosted by the University of Sarajevo's Institute for Research into Crimes against Humanity and International Law (
http://www.inzl.unsa.ba/).   Professor Smail Cekic, Director of the Institute, will serve as Local Conference Chair.

Papers on all aspects of genocide and genocidal violence are welcome, as are proposals for thematic panels. Of particular interest are paper and panel proposals on genocidal violence in the former Yugoslavia, early warning signs of genocide, prevention of genocide, the aftermath of genocide, genocide in comparative perspective, and genocidal aspects of contemporary terrorism. For paper proposals, please send abstracts (350 words maximum) and biographical information on the presenter(s) to Professor Greg Stanton, First Vice-President of IAGS and Conference Director, at
iagsvp@aol.com , copying the Chair of the Program Committee, Professor Alex Hinton, at ahinton@andromeda.rutgers.edu . For suggested thematic panels, please also contact Professors Stanton and Hinton.

All proposals should be submitted by 15 February 2007 and will be refereed by the Program Committee. Proposals for panels should have a consistent theme to which each paper is related. The Program Committee may suggest changes in panels, subject to approval by the convener of the panel. Please note that only paid members of IAGS may present papers. The meeting will begin with a reception, buffet dinner, and opening plenary in the evening of Monday, 9 July.  On Tuesday, 10 July, there will be concurrent panels and plenary sessions.   On Wednesday, 11 July, there will be an optional excursion to the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial Site at Potocari to attend the annual commemoration of the Srebrenica massacre.   Conference participants will also have the opportunity to observe the ongoing exhumation of a mass grave in the vicinity of the Memorial Site.   On Thursday, 12 July, and Friday, 13 July, there will be concurrent panels and plenary sessions.  The meeting will conclude on Friday evening with a banquet at which newly-elected IAGS officers and advisory council members will be introduced


Local assistance with expenses will be available for 20 participants from developing countries, whose institutions cannot pay their travel and other expenses, and free room and board will be provided to 100 students and others with special circumstances. A pre-conference Auschwitz Seminar is being planned in conjunction with the Auschwitz Foundation. It will take place on 6-8 July in Krakow and Auschwitz; seminar participants will fly from Krakow to Sarajevo in the evening of 8 July.
