GENOCIDE EMERGENCY IN DARFUR

The Committee of Conscience of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum has recognized a genocide emergency in Darfur. Despite an agreement between one rebel force and the Government of Sudan (GOS) at Addis Adaba on November 16, there has been no implementation by the GOS which has escalated its attacks. These attacks have spread to neighboring eastern Chad.

The GOS rejects the need to internationalize and fortify the inadequate African Union force in Darfur. Sudanese troops on the ground have become increasingly brutal, not only looting and burning villages but targeting children (see Eric Reeves, www.sudanreeves.org, and Nicholas Kristof, New York Times, November 19, 2006 and on to date) for illustrations. Jan Egeland, UN undersecretary for humanitarian affairs, warned (on November 18) that ‰¥þSpiraling violence in the conflict-wracked region of western Sudan is reaching its worse level since fighting erupted more than three years ago‰¥Ï.I saw a 2-year-old-girl who was shot in the neck at point blank by a janjaweed. This is an act of terror.‰¥ÿ

On November 20, 2006, the Washington Post reported that the Sudanese army backed by janjaweed militia were sweeping through North Darfur state, ‰¥þkilling civilians and looting and burning villages in violation of a cease-fire agreement.‰¥ÿ
